After all the hype surrounding the Lindsay Lohan appearance, we were expecting more than a brief flashback that explained Betty’s hatred of sports. Even the little French kid had more screen time! It would be one thing if Lohan was introduced briefly midseason and continued to make appearances; that would have made sense. Introducing her for thirty seconds before the season’s end was a strange choice.

The softball game scenes were the highlight of this episode, and emphasized the things that Ugly Betty does well. The impractical softball uniforms, the usual Marc and Amanda misbehavior, and a great celebrity cameo. Naomi Campbell was a good sport to go along with the cell phone joke. The game was also a great way to declare Wili the victor of round two of Meade vs. Slater. She won the game and got Daniel’s job.

As well as establishing herself as a credible fashion-world force, Beckham has been keen to win the hearts of the American public since moving her family to LA with husband David last year, and a regular slot on such a popular mainstream show will no doubt help her cause.

We wouldn’t say crusading through paps in tube tops and push-up bras in the name of fame is a cause that needs help. No siree, we think she’s got her cause down and we don’t think acting will help it. Yes, her cameo on Ugly Betty, in which she played/mocked herself, was rather brilliant. But can she really sustain such on-point self-mockery in a recurring role? She nailed every joke one could make about her, but is she dimensional enough to warrant another appearance? What we usually love about her is that she doesn’t leave us asking questions or wanting more (Becks on the other hand…), and we’re perfectly content to get our Vicky Beckham fix from those pap photos. And frankly, we’re not that interested in seeing her play a character. She’s already the best character she can be.

On last night’s episode of Ugly Betty, Wili’s moment of triumph arrived. La Slater is officially back at Mode as Creative Director, and all is right with the Ugly Betty world. This episode was all about couples. Hilda pursued Coach Diaz, Gio pursued Betty, and Marc and Amanda did what they do best–torture Betty. The “Betty Whorez” e-mail was one of those small Mode moments that we haven’t seen in a while. Stay tuned for nexy week season finale with guest appearances from Lindsay Lohan, and Naomi Campbell.

“She was so excited to shoot, a source reported, “Lindsay arrived on set 45 minutes early.” Adds the source, “Lindsay and America [Ferrera] really hit it off!”

Variety reports she’ll play a down-on-her-luck old high school pal of Betty.Lohan’s character was not particularly nice to Betty back then, but when the two bump into each other in the finale, Lohan’s character is down on her luck, in sharp contrast to Betty’s glamorous and promising career at Gotham fashion mag Mode.

Lohan’s first episode airs on the May 22 season finale. The actress will also appear in multiple episodes of the ABC hit.
